Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement values the flexibility and proactive mentality at Orskov Yard

Extensive experience with offshore vessel repairs makes Orskov Yard a preferred service partner for Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement. Recently, a comprehensive dry docking of the Service Operation Vessel (SOV) “Windea Jules Verne” was completed in just 12 days.

“A dry docking is difficult to plan because unexpected issues can arise at any time once you begin dismantling specific parts. With Windea Jules Verne, we faced some surprises, additional scope, and technical problems. But Orskov Yard and its subsidiaries were very hands-on and managed to solve these issues within the agreed timeframe.”

Technical Superintendent Carsten Wenzel from Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM) was very pleased with the docking of Windea Jules Verne at Orskov Yard, which fully met the high expectations set by earlier dockings of the sister vessels Windea Leibniz and Windea La Cour.

”This is our fifth contract with Orskov Yard, and we’ve developed a really good relationship. They’re very customer-oriented and flexible. If a technical issue comes up, Orskov is always able to sort it out and find a solution. I highly value this kind of proactive mentality,” says Carsten Wenzel.

The is as fast as it gets

Thruster overhaul is a core specialty at Orskov Yard — something the crew once again demonstrated during the docking of Windea Jules Verne. The scope of work included a 5-year class survey, maintenance of the vessel’s work-to-work gangway and cranes, along with complete overhauls of the bow, swing-up, and azimuth thrusters.

Although such a scope is typically scheduled for 15-16 days, Orskov Yard completed the work in just 12, much to the satisfaction of Marine Engineer Lars Egede from Kongsberg Maritime, who supervised the docking on behalf of the shipowner.

“This is as fast as it gets. In terms of thruster overhauls, I consider Orskov Yard the best and most efficient repair yard in Europe. Whether there are two, six, or ten people on the job, I can approach any one of them, knowing they’ll get things done. This kind of mindset and team spirit really speeds things up,” says Lars Egede.

As a marine engineer, he has traveled the world for nearly 20 years and considers his visits to Orskov Yard to be something out of the ordinary:

“It’s almost like coming home. We’re quite a few Kongsberg technicians who regularly attend Orskov dockings. We’ve come to know practically everyone at the yard, from senior management to the shop floor. The atmosphere here is very informal and down-to-earth, and you always feel welcome”, says Lars Egede.

The docking of ”Windea Jules Verne” included:

  • Bow thruster (overhaul)
  • Swing up thruster (overhaul)
  • Main azimuth thrusters (overhaul)
  • Uptime 3D gangway (5-year maintenance and overhaul)
  • Red Rock 3D crane (5-year maintenance)
  • 5-year class survey (valves, safety equipment, switchboards, breakers, transformers)
  • Painting of bottom, sea chests, and topside
