Flexibility when it matters the most: A damaged thruster repaired without docking
Recently, Orskov Yard was contacted by Wouter Korbee, responsible for the vessel Shetland, a modern Dutch-flagged cement carrier built in 2019 and owned by JT Cement AS and technically managed by MF Shipping Group.
The vessel had previously been at Orskov Yard for dry docking in 2024, and we were pleased to welcome her back; however, this time regarding an urgent issue: damage to the bow thruster propeller blades.
Maneuvering in ports without a bow thruster is difficult and typically necessitates tug assistance, which increases the owner’s expenses. Therefore, resolving the issue quickly was critical. We looked for a different approach, instead of docking the vessel. The ship was trimmed to provide access and berthed next to the quay. While the ship was still afloat, we were able to successfully remove the damaged blade.
The job was carried out in collaboration with our trusted partner, VMS Group A/S, who welded and restored the blades. With their specialized welding procedures and state-of-the-art facilities conveniently located right next door to our yard, we were able to complete the job swiftly. With the blades repaired and the thruster back in place, we reinforced the protective grid to secure future reliability.
✅ Estimated time: 6 days.
